Growing your first garden is a fun activity on its own, but you also want to enjoy looking at it, smelling the herbs, and delighting in what you have made.
If you find that it is hard to relax in your backyard or on the patio due to lack of shade, there are a few different options available to you.
The following methods of getting shade vary based on price, type of structure, and amount of time it takes to grow or build.
How to Get More Shade in Your Backyard
Buy an Umbrella
For smaller areas that need shade, that at your outdoor table or in the sitting area on the patio, you can buy an umbrella.
There are umbrellas that fit tables, and larger ones that can cover a larger area.
The umbrellas either stick right in the ground of your lawn or garden, or attach to a structure. These are great because you can pick one up and install it within minutes.
There is no waiting time for assembling the umbrella.
Plant a Shade Tree
If you have a little more time and want to provide shade for a larger area in your yard, you can plant shade trees.
These are simply large, tall trees that provide good shade based on the leaves and branches being close together.
There are many different types of shade trees, but you should choose them based on how quickly they grow and which ones are native to your area.
Some good shade trees include the ash tree, nyssa tree, tilia tree, and elm tree. Go to your local gardening center to learn about different shade trees and whether or not you can have them transplanted so you don’t wait quite as long for them to grow.
Plant a Bean Pole Tent
Actually it doesn’t even have to be beans! When I was a child, my father planted sunflowers in a square. They quickly grew into a shady hideaway for me to play inside.
To make a special bean pole hideaway, you’ll want to prepare a 3-foot circle with five six-foot-long stakes spaced evenly around it. Tie them together securely at the top. Plant one climbing pole bean seed on either side of each stake. It will take the beans about six weeks to reach the top of the stakes.
Build a Pergola
If you want to add to the beauty of your garden while also getting more shade, you can try building or buying a pergola.
This type of structure usually has a rectangular shape, with wood slats at the top.
When these slats are close together, they provide a good amount of shade.
You can also get it custom-made to be more solid or curved at the top, providing even more shade. If it is being built, you also have control over the size and location of the pergola. It can be made large enough to have room for a bench underneath, or you can add a cover on top.
Get a Gazebo
Another type of structure you can get for your yard that also provides shade is a gazebo.
This is good when you want a nice sitting area for reading a book or enjoying the view of your garden. They are a little bigger than pergolas, though you can choose from different sizes and styles. Like pergolas, gazebos are usually made of wood. They are also more enclosed than a pergola.
By choosing one of these options, you will provide more shade to certain areas of your yard. It gives you relaxing places to read and sections of the yard to play with the kids, without worrying about the intense, direct heat.0
