You probably have a plant in your kitchen that can cure an incredible variety of skin conditions – severe dryness, premature aging, strong inflammation, and even burns. It’s gentle on sensitive skin and all skin types. Wouldn’t it be wonderful in a homemade moisturizer?

The aloe vera plant, commonly grown as a house plant in North America, has been nicknamed “the miracle herb” for its healing properties, and for good reason.

It’s been used medicinally for more than four thousand years. The ancient Egyptians, Greeks, Chinese, and Indians all used Aloe Vera to cure diseases and adorn their bodies.

Pretty amazing for something you can grow on your window sill. And as an added benefit, it’s one of those important houseplants that purify the air!

Unless you’re like my friend Tina in Nigeria.

When I asked her about the plant, she said they grow in everyone’s backyard. Granted, we do have dandelions, which are medicinal and edible, too, so I guess it’s a fair trade. However, I was so jealous I went out and bought myself a couple of tiny aloe vera plants. Six months later and they’re huge.

Aloe vera is such an an amazing plant that you’ll find it in most cosmetics – the compounds in it do almost magical things to our dry skin.

Like what? Glad you asked!

The aloe plant contains more than 200 compounds: vitamins, minerals, amino acids, enzymes, polysaccharides, fatty acids, salicylic acid, antioxidants, and flavonoids.

In plain language, the aloe contains ALL the important nutrients that our skin and bodies need. Over 200 research studies have been done on this plant and they show that it has three main properties:

anti-inflammatory

antibacterial

So now – time to make your Aloe Vera lotion for skin and body!

Quickly make your own aloe vera lotion using simple ingredients and your choice of essential oils, and moisturize your skin naturally.

If you’re planning on trying this recipe, you’re going to need sweet almond oil or some other carrier oil, aloe vera gel, apricot kernel oilbeeswax and 10 drops of essential oil.

Orange and lemon are nice oils to use, but you could use peppermint and smell like a candy cane, or use lavender and carry a calming presence around everywhere you go. Pick what you want to smell like.

If you’re new to essential oils, I have a rather lengthy post about them.

It is VERY easy to make this aloe vera moisturizer once you have the ingredients.

Combine everything EXCEPT the aloe vera and essential oils in a glass bowl or measuring cup that can handle heat.

Place it in a pan half filled with water. It won’t look pretty. It certainly won’t look like aloe vera lotion!

Place it over low heat until the wax melts.

Remove from heat and let it cool until it gets to room temperature.

Add the essential oils to the aloe vera gel. You could also add a bit of vitamin E oil, if you like.

Slowly pour the gel into the oil mixture.

Whip until it is the consistency of butter. The easiest way to do this is with an immersion blender.

Scrape your aloe vera lotion into a small jar to store.

That wasn’t hard, was it? Probably not much more work than heading down to the shopping center, wandering through the smelly, chemical-filled aisles of cleaners and perfumes, and finding just the right aloe vera moisturizer for you.
